I’m not sure why, but I like writing this post.  I think I enjoy looking back on weekend and thinking about what went right and what I could have done better for the next time I play.  This past weekend I played a little bit of percussion and a little bit on mandolin.  I was excited to play mandolin as it has been a while and my percussion playing centered around the tambourine, one of my favorite noise makers.

Marvelous Light - Charlie Hall (percussion)
O Praise Him - David Crowder (percussion)

Reign In Us - Ben Glover, Jon Neufeld, and Tim Neufeld (percussion)

Living For Your Glory - Tim Hughes (mandolin)
Take My Life - Louie Giglio, Frances Ridley Havergal, Henri Abraham Cesar Malan, and Chris Tomlin (mandolin)
Lift High - Steve Fee and Eddie Kirkland (percussion)

Saturday services were a bit rough on the mandolin.  Like I said it had been a while so I couldn’t play what I wanted to play.  I messed around that night and figured out some things and ended up liking what I switched to better anyway so that worked out nicely.

Percussion went well, or at least I think it did.  My team for the next four months has a solid drummer, which always makes playing percussion that much easier.

All in all a good weekend.  I look forward to playing with this team for next few months.

Songs I Sang On Saturday

This past week Jeremy (by the way you should be reading his blog, it is good stuff) asked me to play percussion on Saturday night since he could find an available drummer for the service.  Obviously, I agreed (or I would not be writing this) and went to practice with the team Thursday night.  Practice went well, had a few sound issues but it gave me the opportunity to familiarize myself with the songs and how we were going to play them.  Since the team was playing with a drummer (who is pretty darn incredible) on Sunday, that was how they practiced I just sort of did my own thing.  On Saturday we got together to practice without the drummer and I was a little nervous.  The team had keys, bass, electric guitar, rhythm guitar, and three vocalists.  That is a lot to carry with just a percussionist.  After the practice I was feeling a little better.  As the service began I decided to leave it in God’s hands, he could do with it as he pleased.  As always that turned out to be the best decision I could have made.  In my opinion the set was not lacking anything because there was not a drummer.  God took care of some things.  So here is the set:

Hosanna - Paul Baloche and Brenton Brown
At The Cross - Daniel Renstrom
I Am Free - Jon Egan
Our Great God - Fernando Ortega and Mac Powell
You Never Let Go - Beth Redman and Matt Redman
Wonderful Maker - Matt Redman and Chris Tomlin

Once again, I was on the worship team for Bridgeway Christian Church.  This weekend went really well.  For whatever reason I felt like I played really well.  Found my spots and didn’t interfere with the rest of the rhythm section.  Oh, I guess I should mention that I was playing percussion.  The set itself also seemed to be a good one.  The worship team were talking about it at practice and we had several people mention they really enjoyed the set as well.  So without further ado, here is the set.
  • Sing to the King - Billy Foote and Charles Silvester Horne
  • How Can I Keep From Singing - Ed Cash, Matt Redman, and Chris Tomlin
  • Christ The Solid Rock - William Batchelder Bradbury and Edward Mote
  • Sweetly Broken - Jeremy Riddle
  • Only You - David Crowder, Mike Dodson, Mike Hogan, and Jason Solley
  • Marvelous Light - Charlie Hall

And because it made me feel good about my playing, since sometimes I feel less then satisfactory about my playing, I had a couple people mention that they enjoy my playing.  That will always make you feel good.

On a spiritual level we also had a person mention that God was clearly at work during worship, helping them through some issues.  This part being more important than all of the others.  God working through what you are doing is simply amazing.  Like I said, it was a good weekend.

So this is a little late.  To be honest I forgot I was going to write this post.  But I have decided to add to it and make it a little more interesting.

This last week I once again had the privilege of playing on the worship team at Bridgeway Christian Church.  Musically, the weekend went very well.  I was very relieved since I was unable to make practice on Thursday so Saturday afternoon right before the first service was my only practice.  Normally, that wouldn’t concern me too much, but this time, there was no drummer.  This left me, playing cajon, and another percussionist, someone I have never played with, on djembe, holding down the rhythm.  Without a drummer there was nowhere for me to hide.  Here are the songs that we played:

  • In The Secret - Andy Park
  • Rescue - Jared Anderson
  • I Will Rise - Louie Giglio, Matt Maher, Jesse Reeves, and Chris Tomlin
  • Lord Of All - Kristian Stanfill

*Message*

  • Lift High - Steve Fee and Eddie Kirkland
  • It Is Well With My Soul - Philip Paul Bliss and Horatio G. Spafford
  • Sing To The King - Billy Foote and Charles Silvester Horne

So this week we changed up the order of things just a bit.  You may notice that we ended the service with three songs this week.  Typically, we play around 6 songs, leave for the message and then return for a closing song.  This past week the pastors collectively decided that a time of response was in order.  So we cut the first set short and came back at the end of the service and led the congregation in three songs.  This lengthened closing set gave them the ability to truly react and respond to the message.  Which leads me to my question.

How does your church (if you go) order their service?  Do they leave time for a time of response?  And, what do you feel about it, do you feel this time is necessary?
