The Lord Is A Warrior

Several years ago Caedmon’s Call came out with a worship album.  On the album was an old hymn (I actually have no clue, but I am assuming it was) called (again no clue) The Lord Is A Warrior.  At the time I really didn’t get it.  I understood that he was with the Israelites as they took over the promised land and he was with them in battle over and over again, but I couldn’t figure out why that would make a worship song.  Aren’t there more important things that we could be singing about?  Love, patience, dying for us.  But recently, largely because we are studying Revelation (just one) at church, I have been thinking about God a little bit differently.  We typically think of the nice and loving side of God.  We leave the scary God of Wrath and Revenge alone.  That is hard to do when reading Revelation.  But I think it is this side of God that is helping me to understand why “The Lord is a Warrior” would make a worship song.  There will come a time when God will say enough is enough.  The blood of my saints has been shed long enough and I am going to come down there and seek revenge.  It is then that I am glad God is a great warrior.  It gives me comfort to know that God will look at the evil and injustices in this world and correct them.  I’m just as glad that the wrath he will unleash is not for me. (As well I don’t want this wrath to be for anyone else).

Bible Study: Mark

This last Tuesday was the first night for a Bible study Colette and I will be starting together.  The first day was more of a get together and hang out, introduce everybody and talk about the logistics of getting together.  After this first week I am very excited about the study for several reasons.

This is going to be my first official group, structured bible study.  So I am eager to jump in and see how things go.  This is also going to be my first Bible study with Colette.  I think we are both excited to learn and grow together.  Also the people in the study are all awesome.  I have spent some time with four of the people and really enjoying hanging out with them.  The other two people, I have met once before and I am eager to get to know them more.  We are all at different places in our lives and in our faith; we are all excited to engage and learn from each other, not just listen to “the leader.”

This is going to be a great study which means that I will have a lot of stuff to ponder through and write about on here.

The Incomprehensible.

At church we are going through a seemingly endless series (that is a good thing) on the book of Revelation.  Throughout this study I have got the impression that God is trying to teach me something.  At least I have been struck with this thought most sermons.  The thought is this:

The God that I/we serve is completely incomprehensible.  Who he is goes beyond anything that the human brain can understand.  It simply cannot be done.  Don’t believe me?  Try imagining something with no beginning or end.  Yet through and because of his love, he reveals himself to us in a way that we can understand.  We can look at creation and see a design.  He draws us to him through life experiences and circumstances.  Look into the face of a smiling baby and tell me there is no God, that all of this was just random chance.

I know this isn’t something deep.  To me it is a reminder of God’s love.  We all need those from time to time.

Why?

Five Easy Pieces dvdrip Why do Christians feel the need to make everything about Jesus or something to do with The Bible or the Christian faith. Aren’t there some things that don’t have a deeper meaning? Stories that aren’t meant to be allegorical? It drives me a little crazy. It makes Christians look… well ignorant. What brought on my little rant? An article comparing the hit TV show The Biggest Loser to the biblical princliple “the first shall be last and last shall be first.” The biggest loser is the biggest winner. The article even went so far as to say this tie to a biblical principle is partially the reason for the success of the show. Maybe I am wrong, but I don’t believe it.

Is it just me or to Christians take things too far? Is there a point where a story, a show, whatever it is does not have a deeper spiritual meaning?
